  Founded as the city of Heiankyo in 794, Kyoto is the former capital and emperor's residence from 794 to 1868. It's an incredibly lovely city but the weather there in the summers and winters is terrible. It's muggy and bitter, respectively, but it's highly recommended as a tourist spot for its many attractions, i.e. almost 25% of Japan's national treasures are situated in Kyoto. I didn't make it there until 2003, what a mistake!
